2004/05 The Under 13 Season so Far...
June, and we've won 6 league matches, lost 7
(including giving Kanturk a walkover and getting one from Everton) and
drawn none. Looking back we should have more points. We started a game
in November against Leeside Knockraha short of regulars because we
agreed to give the GAA first call for an important game that happened to
partly overlap; we lost the first half 4-0 and then when the full team
showed up we won the second half 1-0...if only. We lost a game against
Glounthane 0-2 but should have won 3-0 just because we didn't finish in
front of goal. The only really bad defeat was an 8-0 thrashing by Fermoy
and a defeat to Rockmount just shouldn't have happened. Somewhere 21 and
24 points is where we should have finished, so all in all, a good
performance that all the squad should be content with and use to do even
better next season.

Monday May 2nd
Under 13's home to Glounthane - kickoff 10:30.
Super Villa go Ballistic, Glounthane are Atrocious
The rearranged Under 13 clash
between Villa and Glounthane was played at Skevanish on Bank
Holiday Monday. We were deprived of a couple of the Under 12's
who usually play with us as they were being spared for a cup
game. Luckily they were able to go through a training session
just after our match ;-)
The weather was bad for the last week
and we couldn't get to cut the grass and after another nights
rain the pitch was heavy. Never mind - that ref was happy, we
were happy and Glounthane didn't have any objections so off we
went.
Glounthane came to us with a big
reputation, they are fighting for league honours so we knew
they would expect to win. We were a bit slow to start but
slowly we began to match Glounthane all over the pitch.
It soon became obvious that their best player was the red
headed number 9. He showed great touches and was dangerous
until we man marked him with Jamie Donegan. Then mid way
though the first half Glounthane got a free in front of goal.
We built a wall but somehow the ball found its way through and
before Aidan Davies could get to it through a sea of legs the
ball nestled in the net. Villa didn't give up and we continued
to attack - Gerard Rice played some great balls through to
Conor and Aidan McCarthy and through bad luck and some
inspired defending we couldn't find a way to goal. The second
half started the same way, we attacked and attacked and just
couldn't get a a goal. Conor was unluckky to hit the ball wide
when clean through on the goalie, Gerard just lost control
when he was through and Adam narrowly headed wide with the
baest chance of the half.
Then with seconds remaing the Number 9
scored the winner to make the final score 0-2 It was one of
those days; we could have stayed all day and not scored. Never
mind - it was a great game. Everyone played great, with heart
and passion. We ran for everything and showed we're good
enough to tak on the best teams in our division. Bring on
Leeds and Kanturk!
The team was:
Aiden Davies, Adam Moursy, Jack Walsh, Jamie Donegan, Kevin
Hanley, Liam Kelly, Gerard Rice, Jack Tyner, Brian O'Donovan
(sub: Brian Murnane) Conor McAnallan and Aidan McCarthy.
Joint Men of the Match: Jack & Jamie at the heart
of the defence
Apres
Match:
One Glounthane official took it extremely hard and asked the
referee to get the signatures of two of the Villa players,
Jack and Kevin. The ref told him not to be daft and that
he wouldn't do it. The Glounthane official then stuffed out
his chest and said he was vice Chairman of the Schoolboys
League (are we really that hard up for officials, my Aunt
Nellies stuffed parrot would be a better choice than the
Glounthane numpty). When the ref wouldn't play ball the
Glounthane official, Paddy-Joe McGinnity, asked for the
autographs directly. We asked why but he wouldn't tell.
Eventually it seems he thought Jack & Kevin were over age
- or to put it another way he couldn't understand why we gave
them a great game. So take a choice from the following list to
describe Glounthane officials (the player were great) :
unsporting, bad winners, big heads, numpty's, big girls
blouses.....
Saturday April 23rd
Under 13's away to Blarney
United at O'Shea Park - kickoff 12:30. Meet in Crossbarry at
11:00
What
a turn around! Beaten 9-1 in the Cup we travelled more in hope
that expectation. To make it even worse we were down to the bare
bones with 11 players. It was a wet weekend and we had to play
on the Blarney practice pitch. This was a great display from the
Under 13 team; especially as Blarney must have thought they were
going to get an easy three points.
The
entire team played well together; all the back defended when
needed and the midfield ran and ran. As the game wore on we
began to attack more and more, Blarney tired and we started to
win in midfield. Late in the second half Don Lynch was kicked,
accidentally by Conor, and had to go off. This seemed to make
everyone play harder and then we scored. Jack Walsh passed to
Gerard Rice who made enough room for a shot – the goalie
dropped it and Jack Tyner tapped in for what turned out to be
the winning goal
Team:
Aidan Davies, Adam Moursy, Kevin Hanley, Jack Walsh, Jamie
Donegan, Jack Tyner, Gerard Rice, Don Lynch, Eoghan Delaney,
Conor McAnallan and Aidan McCarthy.
(Thanks
to Liam Kelly for letting the team know he wouldn’t be
travelling and all the best to Eric McSweeney who needs to get
his knee fixed up)
Man
of the Match: Jack Tyner for being there when the goalie dropped
the ball and for a high work rate - tracking back when he had
to.
Saturday March 12th
Under 13 League match away v Tramore
United.
A close game in the end. An even first
half saw us go in 0-0 at halftime. We went one up through a
typical poachers goal from Eoghan Delaney - it was a beauty.
Tramore came back to equalise but Eoghan was in dynamic form and
won the game with another class goal. Deservedly man of the
match, Eoghan gave a great display of out and out goalscoring
prowess (all in front of a scout from Blackburn Rovers)
The team was: Aidan Davies, Jack Walsh,
Jamie Donegan, Adam Moursy, Kevin Hanley, Jack Tyner (sub: Liam
Kelly) Gerard Rice, Don Lynch (sub: Brian O'Donovan) Aidan
McCarthy (sub: Eric McSweeney) Conor McAnallan.
Sunday February 27th

Rockmount.

Rockmount have three points but have only
played three games so far. This could be close - at least we're at
home.
Well done to everyone who put the time and
effort into the two Christmas & New Year coaching sessions.
Squad:
A Davies, Brian O'Donovan, Jack Walsh,
Jamie Donegan, Liam Kelly, Gerard Rice, Jack Tyner, Gary
Cronin, Conor MacAnallan, Eric McSweeney, Brian Murnane, Aidan
McCarthy and Kevin Hanley.
Strand
United December 4th at Skevanish
At
long last - a home match!
The Under 13 team finally had a home game
against Strand United on Saturday December 4th at 12:45.
This was a second attempt to play the game - back at
the start of the season the ref didn't show so we had a practice
match. It looked bad again at 1 o'clock on Saturday when the ref
hadn't appeared but shortly afterwards he showed after being held up
in the roadworks in Innishannon. Having waited around for longer than
expected the Under 13's were so warmed up they had to cool down again.
We kicked off and went straight intp the attack. Gerard Rice and Jack
Tyner started to run the right side of midfield. Slowly but surely the
pressure had to tell, the supporters on the Innishannon side of the
pitch were going mad, they were all standing, waiting for the
inevitable goal and when it came it was a beauty. Eric McSweeney
pounced on a loose ball and smacked it sweetly into the back of the
new. The crowd went crazy! Strand tried to fight back but Jamie
Donegan, having his best match of the season was not going to be
beaten - time and again he stopped their attacks and fed the ball to
our midfield who ate it up. Eventually Strand cracked again and gave
away a desperate free kick outside the box. Gerard Rice stood behind
the ball and thought about where he'd place his kick. He started his
run up, closed his eyes, and let fly - straight into the net - two up
- the crowd went wilder. Does anyone read this stuff? Strand got a
goal - yes the usual flukey one. Towards the end a well worked cross
from the right wing was assuredly side-stepped into the net by Conor
MacAnallan and that was that, 3-1 to the Villa!
-
Goal: Aidan Davies
-
Defence: Kevin Hanley (sub Brian Murnane), Adam Moursy, Jamie
Donegan, Brian O'Donovan,
-
Midfield: Jack Tyner, Gerard Rice and Liam Kelly
-
Attack: Eric McSweeney, Conor MacAnallan and Aidan McCarthy (Sub
Don Lynch)
Man of the Match: Jamie Donegan (Your Derby
County fridge magnet can be collected next week)
Saturday November 27th the Under 14's were
away to Strand at Inniscara at 2:00 PM.
The team was Goal: Shane Nolan
Defenders: Bill Hawkes, Colm Leehane (sub Jack
Tyner 40mins), Alan Coleman, Kevin O'Driscoll.
Midfield: James O'Regan, Gerard Rice, Shane
O'Sullivan,
Forwards: Liam Dempsey, Luke Field (sub Conor
MacAnallan 40 mins), Jack Walsh. Sub not used Adam Moursy
This was another great game from the under 14
team following last weeks cracker against Casement. Kevin O'Driscoll
returned from injury and Jack Walsh started up front. We went into
attack from the start and Liam Dempsey and Luke Field were both
unlucky not to score. Liam in particular has a shot from the wing
pushed onto the post by the goalie. As usual we let in an unlucky
goal against the run of play and but fought back to equalise through
Liam. From then on we dominated play but were unlucky not to get the
winning goal.
The Man of the Match prize of a Derby County
sew-on patch went deservedly to Liam Dempsey but could easily have
gone to Bill Hawkes for an assured display at right back or Colm
Leehane for some great play at centre-half..
Under 13
Saturday November 20th away to Leeside Knockraha.
The squad was:
Goalie: Aidan Davies
Defenders: Kevin Hanley, Adam Morsey, Jack Walsh and Brian O'Donovan
Midfielders: Jack Tyner, Liam Kelly, Gary Cronin, Gerard Rice and
Jamie Donegan.
Forwards: Eric McSweeney and Aidan McCarthy and Eoin Delaney.
Update: There is an Under 13 GAA match on
Saturday also. The following will be playing in that game instead:
Jack Walsh, Gerard Rice, Eric McSweeney and Eoin Delaney. We will
borrow some players from the Under 12 squad to replace them.
Match Report: Well on the worst pitch this
year (and the worst dressing rooms ever) we were narrowly defeated
4-2. It was a game of two halves - we lost the first half 4-0 and
won the second half 2-0. The scorers were Gerard Rice and Jack
Walsh. Niall O'Sullivan made his under 13 debut.
Sunday November 14th Under 14 match away to Midleton A.
Kickoff 11.00
We never seem to have a good time at Midleton
- last year we got lost looking for the pitch. At least this year we
knew where we were going! Due to illness and sleeping in we were
down to the bare bones with only 11 players. The team was Shane
Nolan in goal, Bill Hawkes, Gerard Rice, Adam Moursy and Kevin
O'Driscoll at the back, Jack Walsh, Shane O'Sullivan, Jack Tyner and
James O'Regan in midfield with Luke Field and Liam Dempsey up front.
Kitman/Ballboy/Physio: Aidan Walsh
We started off well and conceded an unlucky
goal to go in at half time one down. However, Adam Mursey got a
knock on the knee which slowed him down and put our defence under
pressure. Midleton scored three more goals and that was that. The
team all voted Adam man of the match for his great first half
display and he was presented with a very rare Derby County lapel
badge in recognition.
November 7th Under
13 at Fermoy.
Not a good day, we were beaten 8-0. We could
have defended a bit better.
The team was Aidan Davies in goal. Defenders
were Kevin Hanley, Gerard Rice, Gary Cronin and Brian O'Donovan.
Midfield Jack Walsh, Aidan McCarthy (sub Jack Tyner 30 mins, Jamie
Donegan and Liam Kelly. Forwards Eric McSweeney (sub Adam Mursey 30
mins) and Conor McAnallen.
October
2nd - Cup Time - David v Goliath...nearly!
Our Under 14 team are drawn against Douglas Hall from Division 1A -
time for a giant killing performance. Douglas have only played one
match in the league and were narrowly beaten away to the league
leaders Macroom FC. Nevertheless they are from a higher division -
this ones a bit like Derby County facing Man Utd.
Result: Villa 0 Douglas Hall 6. Oops - they were good.
September
18. Under 14's at home to Youghal.
Well this was the biggest
match so far this season. Youghal are the early pacesetters in our
division, having won both their opening matches 7-0 against Crosshaven
and Casement Celtic.
The team played with the
strong wind in the first half and took the game to Youghal right from
the start. Alan Coleman opened the scoring with a cracker from the six
yard box. Youghal struck back but Villa weren't going to lie down.
from a direct free outside the box, slightly to the left, Jack Walsh
scored in off the opposite upright.
Youghal got a flukey equaliser
and the sides were 2-2 at half time.
Kevin O'Driscoll was taken off
at half time with a sore leg as a precaution for the big GAA match on
Monday night and was replaced by Luke Field.
Assisted by the wind, Youghal
scored three great goals in the second half to run out worthy winners.
This was the best game we
played this season. We are the first team to score against Youghal and
the scoreline could have been a lot closer. This will give us great
confidence to know we can give the division leaders a big scare.
The team was: Shane Nolan,
Gerard Rice, Colm Leehane, Bill Hawkes, Kevin O'Driscoll, Alan
Coleman, Jack Walsh, Liam Dempsey, Shane O'Sullivan, Conor MacAnallen,
James O'Regan and Luke Field.
September
13th 2004-09-21
Under
13
Away
to Hibernian at Shanbally.
Hibernian
1 Innishvilla 9
Phew
– what a game! We didn’t know what to expect from Hibernian so
travelled more in hope than expectation. This was the night that the
victorious Cork hurlers came home to a heroes welcome so we didn’t
expect a large crowd and we weren’t disappointed. It was also the
windiest night in years - Hurricane Charly was ripping across the
Caribbean and we were getting some of its tail end.
Hibernian
won the toss and decided to play against the wind – that was a
mistake. They found it difficult to kick the ball out past the penalty
area. We went in at half time with a 5-1 lead. Things calmed down in
the second half but we ran out 9-1 winners. Conor MacAnnallen with
four and Jack Walsh with five were our scorers
So
who won man of the match? The two goal scorers had a great night and
Aidan McCarthy was solid in defence but the worthy winner was Don
Lynch who, playing on the left wing in midfield, was constantly
getting behind the Hibernian backs – a great display of attacking
midfield play.
Team:
Aidan Davies, Aidan McCarthy, Kevin Hanley, Liam Kelly, Gerard Rice,
Bryan O’Donovan , Eoin Delaney, Don Lynch, Jack Walsh, Jamie
Donegan, Conor MacAnnallen.
