Making a gas case for Kinsale
Southern Star June 10th 2006
A CALL on An Bord Gais by Mr. Kevin Murphy to put in place “now” the
necessary infrastructure to allow Kinsale town and its environs the benefit of a
natural gas supply arising from the extension to the Eli Lilly pharmaceutical
plant at nearby Dunderrow was unanimously adopted at a recent meeting of Cork
County Council.
“It would be unthinkable to denude or exclude the Kinsale area from being
allowed the benefit of a Kinsale gas supply at any time in the future,” said
Mr. Murphy. “It is vital that An Bord Gais is not short sighted, in particular
having regard to the fact Kinsale and its hinterland have grown substantially
over the last few years and also because the pipeline is coming within two miles
of the town. It is imperative to get the pipe size right before work continues.”
At a recent meeting of Bandon-Macroom Area Committee, Mr. Murphy repeated his
call for removal of bad bends and realignment of the Innishannon-Kinsale road at
Shippool to incorporate a riverside amenity area.
He complained that lack of progress in coming up with a design was unacceptable.
Many heavy vehicles used the road and its upgrading should be prioritised with
gas being piped to Eli Lilly. He asked that his request be forwarded to the road
design section in the council.
In reply to Mr. Murphy at a recent meeting of the Southern Committee, acting
manager, Mr. Declan Daly, said the council had advertised inviting submissions
for the redevelopment of the car park at Church Square, Kinsale, for a multi
storey car park incorporating some housing, commercial and retail units, as well
as an artistic facility or feature. It was intended this would be a
public-private-partnership (PPP) project.
Mr. Murphy welcomed the new access for the proposed civic amenity site at
Commoge, Kinsale. The bi-monthly report on housing stated that the planning
application was lodged for 53 social, 57 Affordable Housing Scheme (AHS), 51
Cluid Voluntary Housing Scheme dwellings and 22 private sites at Commoge,
Kinsale. The criteria for selecting tenants etc. was the same for all housing
types.
In reply to Ms. Veronica Neville, senior executive officer Mr. Ted O’Leary
said eight out of l7 AHS units had been offered to qualifying tenants at
Springmount, Kinsale. A total of 20 houses had been allocated under ‘Part 5’
of the Planning Act (i.e. requirement for 20% of a private development to be
social or affordable housing) in two developments at Belgooly; three houses at
Hillcrest and one at Curra, Riverstick.
The committee formally recommended disposal of the council’s equity in a
Shared Ownership Scheme house at Springmount, Kinsale.
Members were also informed that the county solicitor was due to pursue
injunctive proceedings to enable long overdue construction of a council dwelling
at Burren, Kilbrittain. Mr. Murphy urged that this long standing matter be
resolved. It was also stated that the closing date for five social and 20
Affordable Housing Scheme (AHS) units at Ballinspittle was on May 19 last and
this was welcomed by Mr. Alan Coleman, who paid tribute to the local housing
co-operative.
