Féile na nGael is a national
festival of Hurling, Camogie and Handball for boys and girls under 14 years of
age and is based on the GAA club unit. Féile na nGael is sponsored by Coca-Cola
Bottlers (Ire) Ltd. and they have been sponsors since 1971. This is the longest
running sponsorship in the GAA or of any other sporting event in this country or
even in Europe.
Each year some 25,000 boys and girls take part in this festival in all 32
counties. London and Warwickshire also participate in this festival. When the
preliminary competition is completed in each county, the winning club then
travels to the host county or province where they are hosted by families and
engage the host club in hurling, camogie and handball games. Since 1971 over 1
million boys and girls have participated in this great festival.
Féile na nGael is a national movement with the primary objective of
facilitating and enabling the personal, social and cultural development of young
people. It also emphasises cultural and community activities, leadership and
training through sport. It is recognised by the GAA as a major festival of great
importance for the promotion of hurling, camogie and handball among the youth of
our country. It also has the full support of the GAA, the Department of
Education, Irish Sports Council and other Government bodies and cultural
agencies.
Féile na nGael places great emphasis and importance on proper participation,
presentation, punctuality and sportsmanship. It reaches through the nation
involving the whole community - clubs, schools, social and cultural groups,
Gardaí, bands, civic and religious authorities and families. It helps to bond
communities, forge friendships, provide educational opportunities and unearth
new leaders.

Valley Rovers Hurling & Football
Club is from the west
Cork
village
of
Innishannon
which also includes the areas of Knockavilla, Gurrans and castlelack. The
club was founded in 1913 and within three years were involved in the Under
16 county final.
Valley Rovers has been consistently
expanding, with the purchase of the pitches in Innishannon (known as The
Bleach) in 1968 and the opening of Brinny in 1998. The club is proud to be
associated with two past presidents of the GAA; the late Sean McCarthy who
was elected in 1932 and Con Murphy who was elected president in 1976.
A continuing and expanding youth
policy, together with a number of dedicated under-age committees plus a
large group of volunteers has led to a number of successes. The under 14
team won the Feile na nGael championship in 1976 and the club represented
Cork
in the Feile held in
Waterford
in 1996 and Wexford in 1999. A number of players represent
Cork
at minor level while Brendan O’Sullivan, Alan Quirke and Eamonn Collins
have played with
Cork
at senior level.
2005 was a very successful year for
us. Firstly our under 14’s became All Ireland Feile na nGael winners and
we presently hold county championships at U12, U14 and U16 levels.
