The candidates in Cork North West were asked to contribute to the website. Michael Creed of Fine Gael was the only candidate who responded: Thanks for the opportunity and 4 Issues spring to mind immediately; 1 Footpaths and Public Lighting from Cluain na Croise to Crossbarry; At the most recent monthly meeting of the Councils roads committee I raised this issue with the local area engineer (Mr Ken O Riordan Ballincollig ) and I am pleased to inform your readers and local residents that a commitment was given to doing these works in 2007 with a likely start date of Sept/Oct. 2Funding for local roads; I have consistently fought against the inequity of road funding from the Dept of the Environment which sees Cork County Council receive 5008 euros per km (THE THIRD LOWEST ALLOCATION) whilst at the top of the league table Kildare County Council receives 11280 euros per km followed by Meath and Wicklow on 10146 and 9974 euro respectively. (Pale Mentality !!) This is the single biggest obstacle the Council faces in its efforts to maintain a decent standard of local roads 3. The ongoing nightmare of flooding at and around the Pub in Upton should end with a commitment I have received from the local engineer (Mr Ray Crowley Bandon) to complete works in the vicinity before the onset of next winter. 4 Broadband Availiability; This continues to be a joke with most residents so far removed from their Eircom exchange as to be unable to receive Broadband even if the exchange has been “enabled”. The Council through the Regional Authority had a broadband coordinator working with local communities investigating other technology to assist in the delivery of Broadband through Independent Service Providers but Government funding has been withdrawn for this. This remains one of the key infrastructural deficits in the countryside that I am committed to working to resolve
Our Dail Representatives in Cork North West Michael Moynihan was criticised in December 2006 for being one of the quietest speakers in the Dail. As can be seen from his website (click here) he seems to agree. His last contribution to the Dail was in 1999. Donal Moynihan is rumoured to be alive. His contributions in the Dail cannot be found and when contacted for a comment for the community web we failed to get a response. Donal may also be seen to be an ideal politician - he does nothing so cannot cause any harm. Bless him! In 2003 a Sunday newspaper revealed that "Donal Moynihan, a Fianna Fail TD for Cork North West, was the second-highest expenses claimer in the Dail, getting almost €78,000 for travel, subsistence and office administration costs." Bless him! See he does lead the way in one way at least.
